What to pack for travel to other parts of the world

europe winter packing

The following is a suggested packing list for a Contiki winter tour to Europe.

People are individuals though and often have personal preferences and opinions as to what to bring. The following then is not a definitive list, but should give you a good guide as to what you should pack for your European winter tour.

Clothes

  • 1 rainproof jacket/small umbrella
  • 1 or 2 shorts/skirts
  • 1 thick sweater
  • 1 swimwear (some hotels may have pools)
  • 2 or 3 pairs of jeans
  • 2 or 3 T-shirts
  • Underwear (lots)
  • Socks (lots)
  • 2 or 3 casual shirts
  • Trousers
  • Dresses
  • 1 set of smart clothes (eg tie, blazer, jacket or suit for evenings out while on tour)
  • 1 thick, warm jacket
  • scarf, gloves and warm winter hat

Shoes

  • Comfortable walking shoes – waterproof if possible – snow is cold and wet
  • Thongs/flipflops/sandals
  • ‘Going out’ shoes

Toiletries

  • Toiletry bag
  • Toothpaste, Toothbrush, Deodorant
  • Make up, moisturizers and hair products
  • Suntan lotion – just because it’s cold doesn’t mean there is no sun
  • Handkerchiefs/tissues
  • Insect repellent
  • Lip balm

Miscellaneous

  • Travel Clock
  • Sunglasses
  • Plastic bags
  • Washing powder
  • Sewing kit
  • Aspirins/medications
  • Pens and writing materials
  • Rechargeable phone card
  • Power adapters
  • Day bag
  • Overnight bag

Label your suitcase inside and out with your name and your home address and perhaps attach a sticker, ribbon, patch or other unique identifier to your luggage to make it easier to spot.

Carry a copy of your passport, visas, travel and other important documents as well as your travellers cheque numbers (if you use them) with you in your luggage. You should also leave a copy of all this information at home with someone trusted and contactable while you are away.

Don’t pack your travel documents and passport in your luggage, rather take it with you in your carry luggage.

Remember to bring more than enough of any medication you might need along with you and carry prescriptions for any medications that you carry with you.

  1. i really don’t want to bother with a rain coat would a nice dress coat be good enough with an umbrella as well?

  2. Another shoe question – the leather boots turned out to be uncomfortable. So now it is between water resistance sports shoes, or ski boots. Seeing as I can use them again after the tour, I am leaning towards sports shoes, but not sure… perhaps I’ll buy those leather boots in europe!

  4. It’s between one of these 3 Winter trips in March…European Discovery, European Inspiration, and European Vista! In your opinion which one is the most popular? And which will I see more? They all sound very similar. I’m so excited I can’t wait!

  5. im doing the winter wanderer tour starting in feb, and am terrified that i am going to FREEZE. i will be bringing as many warm clothes as i can possibly fit into my bag. i am normally a chronic over-packer, but this trip i am going all out.

  6. I’m going in winter and was wondering if taking a tramping backpack or suitcase is easiest to travel with? The tour I’m doing uses coaches for travel and we are staying in hotels. Would it make much difference using a backback or suitcase?

  7. We’re going the end of September on European Magic. Do you think that summer will still be here?? What’s the Farmer’s almanac say… :o)

  8. Im going on a tour October (euro discovery). Im a bit confused on what the weather will be like, should i pack summer and fall-like clothes since the south will be warmer and north colder? How cold is cold? Do i need to bring thick jackets? or light ones will do? how about leather boots?

  9. Be prepared for all of the above – Europe is a (surprisingly) big place – most tours cover quite a bit of ground and just like it’s not possible to generalize about weather in the US (Feb. in Floria is very different to Feb. in Boston) you can’t generalize about all of Europe – the northern regions are going to be usually colder (sometimes snowing) in Feb/March than the south (Spain, Italy, Sth France).

  10. What’s the weather like in Europe in March and April? I’m planning on a trip at that time and not sure if I pack for rain, snow, or sunshine!

  11. Leather boots will do the trick…plus they look a lot classier (so you can wear them out, etc) and are probably more comfortable than wellingtons too.

  12. How waterproof? Are you talking leather boots, or wellingtons?

  13. that sounds like a lot of stuff for a little bit of space that we are allowed to have for luggage! so jeans and shirts all the way! jeans are easy to dress up and down too!

  14. A DRESS FOR WINTER!!! Sounds like a waste of valuable Souvenir space to me!!!

  15. Decide what you want to take….and halve it – that’s how much you’ll probably need. If you still have too much, halve it again. You can always pick up clothes and little things you need (or have forgotten) on the road.
